چکیده

Glossary Deep water A surface wave is said to be in deep water if its wavelength is much shorter than the local water depth. Internal wave A internal wave travels within the interior of a fluid. The maximum velocity and maximum amplitude occur within the fluid or at an internal boundary (interface). Internal waves depend on the density-stratification of the fluid. Shallow water A surface wave is said to be in shallow water if its wavelength is much larger than the local water depth. Shallow water waves Shallow water waves correspond to the flow at the free surface of a body of shallow water under the force of gravity, or to the flow below a horizontal pressure surface in a fluid. Shallow water wave equations Shallow water wave equations are a set of partial differential equations that describe shallow water waves.

Higher order corrections for shallow-water solitary waves: elementary derivation and experiments

We present an elementary method to obtain the equations of the shallow-water solitary waves in different orders of approximation. The first two of these equations are solved to get the shapes and propagation velocities of the corresponding solitary waves. The first order equation is shown to be equivalent to the Korteweg−de Vries (KdV) equation, while the second order equation is solved numeric...

High-Order Interaction of Solitary Waves on Shallow Water

The interaction of solitary waves on shallow water is examined to fourth order. At first order the interaction is governed by the Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equation, and it is shown that the unidirectional assumption, of right-moving waves only, is incompatible with mass conservation at third order. To resolve this, a mass conserving system of KdV equations, involving both rightand left-moving wa...

Dynamics of Bright Solitary-waves in a General Fifth-order Shallow Water-wave Model

New analytic sech2-type traveling solitary-wave solutions, satisfying zero background at infinity, of a general fifth-order shallow water-wave model are found and compared with previously obtained non-zero background solutions. The allowed coefficient regions for the solitary-wave solutions are classified by requiring the wave number and angular frequency to be real. Detailed numerical simulati...

Secondary criticality of water waves. Part 1. Definition, bifurcation and solitary waves

A generalization of criticality – called secondary criticality – is introduced and applied to finite-amplitude Stokes waves. The theory shows that secondary criticality signals a bifurcation to a class of steady dark solitary waves which are biasymptotic to a Stokes wave with a phase jump in between, and synchronized with the Stokes wave. We find the that the bifurcation to these new solitary w...

On the Galerkin/Finite-Element Method for the Serre Equations

A highly accurate numerical scheme is presented for the Serre system of partial differential equations, which models the propagation of dispersive shallow water waves in the fully-nonlinear regime. The fully-discrete scheme utilizes the Galerkin / finiteelement method based on smooth periodic splines in space, and an explicit fourth-order Runge-Kutta method in time. Computations compared with e...
